The fee of the large European operators to the digital giants.
By way of a joint letter published last Monday in the ‘Financial Times’ journal, the four large European operators (Telefónica, Orange, Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom) demand that the digital giants pay or invest for using networks.
This post is about ...
Infrastructures at risk.
This is because the presidents of the large European operators, through that document, report their concern that the deployment of infrastructures required for digital transformation is at risk if colossus like YouTube (Google), Facebook or Netflix only take advantage of 5G but do not finance the millionaire investments required for its deployment.
Streaming, social networks and videogames.
According to the current data provided by the operators, video streaming, social networks and videogames, created by a few platforms of digital content, represent more than 70 % of the total traffic that circulates through the networks.
In short, operators have to invest heavily to improve their connectivity in an increasingly competitive and stagnant market, while the business of content platforms, which uses the operators’ networks, can scale at a low cost.
Urgent appeal to the European Commission.
Telefónica, Vodafone, Orange and Deutsche Telekom urge the European Commission to legislate it with regulatory reforms so that all those taking advantage of using networks and digital transformation contribute fairly and proportionately to the costs to make it possible.
The operators warn that if this legislation does not occur, Europe is at risk of being left behind compared to other economic powers. They give the example of South Korea and the USA, which are promoting laws to guarantee a more balanced contribution to the platforms.
