5 keys of the positive evolution of the telecom market in 2021.
According to the research published by the CNMC, there were a greater investment and higher revenue in the telecom industry during 2021, which shows an industry recovery and starts a take-off in a post-COVID era.
This post is about ...
1.- Greater investment.
During the past year, investment in the telecom industry increased by almost 30 %, with a total amount of 7,574 million euros. A great part of this investment was made by the main operators when deploying networks with new-generation access and mobile networks.
2.- Increased retail and wholesale revenue.
Following the 2020 drop, the industry’s global revenue reached 34,393 million euros, retail revenue increased by 3.7 % and wholesale revenue by 5.3 %.
While it is true that the retail market has not exceeded pre-pandemic revenue figures, years 2019-2022, the wholesale revenue increased until its best figure since 2012.

3.- Retail revenue by operator.
In this case, the three major operators represented 74.2 % of total retail revenue, distributed as follows:
- Movistar 40,9%
- Vodafone 16,8%
- Orange 16,5%
In this regard, the revenue rate of MásMóvil Group should be highlighted, which already possesses a rate of 10.8 % after acquiring Euskaltel.
4.- New-generation accesses.
In 2021, 78 million new-generation accesses were deployed in Spain, of which fibre accesses (FTTH) increased by 15.3 %, going from 59 million in 2020 to 68 million in 2021.
5.- Employment.
The five per cent increase of employees, including those of the audio-visual segment, is another indicator of the industry take-off, which has risen for the second consecutive year going from 57,492 to 60,369. Still, these figures are somewhat far from the 63,499 of 2015, although the trend is that next year may be close to it and even match or exceed them.
