Orange is awarded Renfe’s mobile lines contract.
Renfe awards Orange the contract of their mobile lines, which includes more than 24,000, for a term of 4 years, which may be extended for an additional period of one year, and which amounts to 9 million Euro. Vodafone was the operator who was awarded this service before.

Adapt and customise the offer.
Joaquín Colino, director of the Business Unit of Orange, stated that the key of this awarding is Orange capacity to: ‘fully adapt and customise our offer to Renfe’s mobility needs.’ He also pointed out that ‘Digital transformation that Public Administrations are facing reflects which it was already happening in private-sector companies.’
Orange explains that the project includes more than 24,000 mobile lines distributed depending on Renfe’s specific needs:
- 7,000 voice lines for their drivers
- 8,000 voice and data lines for their office employees
- 9,000 machine-to-machine lines (M2M) for connectivity services of the Internet of Things (IoT).
M2M lines, bandwidth and SMS platform.
The 9,000 M2M lines will be intended to interconnect trains, ticket offices, automatic ticket vending machines, alarms or ticket-checking units, among other services, that will allow Renfe ‘to improve the management, control, and automation of their business processes.’
Thanks to the new contract, Renfe will improve the NPC connections between their data processing centres by increasing bandwidth up to 10GB.
The new contract also includes the renewal of the customised bulk SMS platform of Renfe, which is integrated into their current systems, by providing it with ‘more safety and capacity’. The SMS platform is one of the key points of Renfe’s services, as it is used, for example, to send ticket sale validation codes.
Orange improves their number of contracts.
It should be considered that, throughout the last year, Orange was awarded the communication services of the ICO, the Court of Audit, the Senate, the Spanish Tax Agency, Red.es, the Bank of Spain, and the connected schools project s of Madrid and Castile and León, among others.
